This Sporting Life (Lindsay Anderson, 1963)
Britain had its own cinema "New Wave" in the 1960s, along with other countries. It was called the Free Cinema movement, heralding the films of Ken Loach. Lindsay Anderson's This Sporting Life was a very good example of it, starring Richard Harris with his Marlon Brando look.
Part documentary about rugby, part touching love story featuring an older woman trying to find her freedom and abandon everything for the love of her life, it is also a brutal look at class relations in Britain at the time, adapted from a book by Richard Storey. It's a jewel and a classic of British social cinema. Screening at the Pathé Bellecour on Saturday 17 October (17:00).
