Pale Rider (Clint Eastwood, 1985)
Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, who made the Cannes 2007 Golden Palm winner Four Months, Three Weeks and Two Days, will introduce Eastwood's film, which was itself nominated for the Golden Palm in 1985.
1985 was a good year for Eastwood. French director Jean-Luc Godard dedicated his film Detective to him and Pale Rider made the Cannes shortlist. Eastwood wanted to defend the Western genre, which he considered his cinema roots. Pale Rider was inspired by a 1953 George Stevens film, Shane, which also led Sergio Leone to make his Dollar Trilogy.
The foreunner of Eastwood’s Unforgiven (1992), Pale Rider will be introduced by Mungiu, who had more luck in Cannes than Eastwood.
