Film of the day
L’Enfer d’Henri-Georges Clouzot
Henri-Georges Clouzot chose Romy Schneider and Serge Reggiani in 1964 to star in L’Enfer, an unusual and mysterious low-budget film about jealousy that promised to be the film event of the year. But the film was suddenly abandoned after three weeks of shooting and the footage was forgotten for half a century. Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea have unearthed 15 hours of it to make a documentary about a great French film disaster. What they found is remarkable. Schneider was never more hypnotically beautiful but Clouzot was also experimenting by breaking the normal rules of cinema to explore the mysteries of madness and paranoia. Co-director Bromberg, along with film critic Michel Ciment, will introduce the film at the Cinéma Les Alizés (in Bron) on Friday 16 October (20:30).
