Jack Garfein returns on DVD
Garfein only made two films but one of them, The Strange One (1957), with Ben Gazzara and George Peppard, became a cult film and has just been reissued in DVD. New York Times film critic Dave Kehr reviews it.
Gazzara plays an eccentric cadet called Jocko deParis at a Southern US military academy who is fond of silk dressing-gowns and cigarette-holders. It was Garfein’s first film and was followed by Something Wild (1961), starring his wife Carroll Baker and Ralph Meeker.
Later he went to France and set up the Jack Garfein Studio in Paris, which trained Irène Jacob, Sam Karmann, Valérie Stroh and Samuel Le Bihan. He also gave master classes. The Cinémathèque Française presented his films in a tribute in 1984.
