Directors in their final years
New York Times film critic A.O.Scott writes a fascinating article about “Directors in Their Magic Hour,” noting that ageing directors often produce rich and energetic work.
He describes the methods, obsessions and tics of several major directors in their twilight years, among them John Ford, Robert Altman, Billy Wilder, Manoel de Oliveira, Stanley Kubrick, Jean-Luc Godard, Michael Powell, Federico Fellini, Clint Eastwood and Woody Allen. The article coincides with a season of “late films” at the BAMcinématek, in Brooklyn.
